Two kilograms of heroin were found sewn into the hems of a traditional Pakistani bridal gown after a routine inspection by Heathrow officials.
Mohammed Khalil Bhatti, 33, from Pakistan, appeared before magistrates on Tuesday 5th June in Uxbridge. He faces importation charges while a 30-year-old man from Luton was arrested and bailed in connection with the inquiry.
Officials found the drugs when they inspected the gown, flown into Terminal 3 from Karachi, on Sunday 3rd June.
Border Force Heathrow deputy director Damon Jackman said: “Border Force officers are on constant alert to keep heroin and other banned substances out of the UK.
“Drug trafficking is a serious offence and those convicted face long prison sentences.
“This seizure was highly unusual and shows the lengths smugglers will go to.”
